Be sure to watch "Leave it to Beaver" on Sunday, May 27 (I think its at 9AM ET). Its the episode in which Wally goes camping with his Boy Scout Troop, and Beaver gets upset because he's too young to go.

We do community service 2-3 times a year, but we go camping about 6-7 times, totalling about 18-20 nights out a year. Our boys are 11-17 years old, and they like to get away from the populated areas and test their skills, learn to be self reliant. It makes them feel more like men.
What do you do for the schools? What does your volunteering involve?

Proposed: the Scoutmaster's Law - rough draft

After my first week of Woodbadge, pondering some potential goals for our troop, I realized our need for some basic principles that our adult leaders could memorize and use to guide their actions. I am offering this rough draft for all to praise or criticize, amend or edit. I welcome all feedback.

Woodbadge, 2007 version

April 18th. Allow me to report in after the first half of my Woodbadge training: first, we should be proud of our organization that seems to have done a good job of responding to last year’s feedback by making changes in the new course. This year over 30% of the syllabus is new, because of last years suggestions. The materials and methods to teach it are well done and helpful. The

Recruiting new scouts

Regarding recruiting: Our school principle told me that “because the school teachers just don’t have enough time to teach all their mandatory subjects”, I am not allowed to speak to the kids again this year, even for just the last few minutes of the day to hand out some new DVD’s we created. She also said they are discussing “not letting any outside groups talk to the classes at all next year.” I noticed a lot more hostility from the teachers this year.Continue

Churches and Scouting...need each other but not the same as in the past

Two books have really got me going lately; Why Men Hate to Go to Church(by Murrow) and Wild at Heart(Eldredge). The way they describe masculinity and the deepest needs of men has really got me thinking about the Church in American loosing 90% of all it's males between confirmation and college age...and how Scouting is not recruiting as well as we should, and how we are shut out of the schools.

My challenge to Scouters is to two fold: 1) Rick's slogan #1 f
